Dear Sisters and Brothers of IBEW Local 659:
I am saddened to report, I’ve recently received several complaints from members, past and present, non-members, and retired Local 659 elected officials, regarding ignorant racist comments, intended to incite animosity and create division. These comments are being tracked to individuals claiming connection to the IBEW. Let me assure you, comments of this nature have nothing to do with the IBEW, or this Local Union.
The fabric fashioning the membership of the IBEW, is one of many colors and origins. Equality, Tolerance, and Diversity are at the core of who we are.
The American Labor Movement and Civic Rights Movement are forever linked.
IBEW International President Lonnie Stephenson said, “This is the time for all those who love America and care deeply about its values to speak out in the name of justice and against systemic racism.”
Every member of the IBEW takes an oath to uphold the IBEW Constitution at the time of initiation, which is listed below to remind us who we are, and what we stand for.
May God heal our Country from the damage done by individuals whose sole intention is to divide us for reasons deeply rooted in hatred, for their personal gain.
Declaration of the INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF ELECTRICAL WORKERS
Our cause is the cause of human justice, human rights, human security.
We refuse, and will always refuse, to condone or tolerate dictatorship or oppression of any kind.
We will find and expel from our midst any who might attempt to destroy, by subversion, all that we stand for.
The Brotherhood will continue to oppose communism, Nazism or any other subversive “ism.” We will support our God, our Nations, our Union.
